Marjorie Virginia Strider (January 26, 1931 – August 27, 2014) was an American painter, sculptor and performance artist best known for her three-dimensional paintings and site-specific, soft sculptures and 3 dimensional paintings. She showed alongside Warhol, Oldenburg and her work is featured in over 20 museums . Please Visit Wikipedia for more information on Strider.
I observed her work firsthand in both school and assisting her in her studio move her work around once or twice. Marjorie’s work was as an afront to the viewer, she didn’t paint for you,she painted at you, absolutely volatile and unapologetic, to say her work was challenging for me is putting it mildly. For example, her triptychs and some of the pinups from the 60’s were painted 2-dimensionally with the breasts and buttocks created 3-dimensionally coming off the
canvas are downright horrifying and pushes through (as intended) the viewers gaze and traditional ideals of seduction. Marjorie choked you on female objectivity and denied you from being turned on and turned you out. She leaves the viewer feeling naked and in cheap
depravity. At the time in the 90’s I didn’t realize how good she was and how powerful that work is. Her star gets brighter with time.
